Centre for Rural Development Studies

The Centre for Rural Development Studies (Centro de Estudios para el Desarrollo Rural) has been active for over two decades primarily in Central and South America and the Caribbean, as well as in Asia, Africa and transcontinental projects. Its work has been to support public and private interventions through results based on applied research and professional independence. CDR is based in San José, Costa Rica.

CDR offers the national and international cooperation sectors, public and private entities, and non-governmental, non-profit organizations (NGO) a wide variety of professional services: Consulting and Training, Systematization and Research, Policy and Program Formulation, Program Implementation, and Evaluation and Impact Studies. Its service is based on principles of strict autonomy, academic rigor, and effectiveness, with the aim of generating additional capacity for the agencies and their counterparts and target groups.

CDR´s core research team has consultants in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras and the Dominican Republic/Haiti, and also works with a well established international and multidisciplinary network of associate consultants. Its researcher-consultants are experts in diverse areas, such as: Planning and Evaluation, Finance and Management, Markets and Value Chains, Environmental Development, Human Development and Gender.

Some of the main organizations with which CDR has had professional relationships over the past twenty years are: Oxfam Novib, HIVOS, ICCO, Triple Jump, Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development (AECID), Inter American Development Bank (IDB), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Netherlands (IOB), Swedish Cooperative Centre, European Commission and EU Programs, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Agrofair Assistance and Development (AFAD), Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE), UNICEF, RUTA, among others. CDR also provides direct services to local NGO’s and community-based organizations in the region.
 
Since the Foundation started in 1989, an estimated total of over 500 projects (consultancies and/or applied research) have been carried out in the field of economic and social development.
